Danger of Extinction of Essential Oils
Welcome my friend to Essentially Aware focus on the danger of rare essential oils being made extinct. It could happen to any essential oil as they come from plants. You will find links here to reputable information, and remember essential oils are not be a collector's item.
Some areas of the aromatherapy industries greed has nearly wiped out plants that produce beautiful supporting essential oils. Some of our essential oils are still produced in the wild and even as cultivatation is starting, the demand can far out stripping the supply. In the plant world, this is not a good thing to have occurring as once gone, it could be gone for ever. Hint, that essential oil is gone!
Be mindful when ordering essential oils, do I need to replace this essential oil? Did you use the essential oil? Please know why You are purchasing this essential oil, how to use that essential oil for You, and not buying for the sake of a sale or must have like a collectors item. Perhaps, You don't need these essential oils at home and can have an individual blend made for You to use at home or buy a blend off the shelf that have these essential oils that You want to use.
See Natalie Miller, blog on Essential Oil Consumption.
Passionate aromatherapists don't have a collection (they are not a collectors item), they have a toolbox of essential oils to work with You. They are deciding what are the minimum of essential oils they require, in order to do there professional work with You, as the client. We have to demonstrate how precious the essential oils of the world are. See Elizabeth Ashley, video on Spikenard in Video 1, link here, as explain the importance of using on rare occasions. Grab a herbal cuppa, sit and listen to Elizabeth's video. Take notes for future reference.
This little page, is not saying to be ashamed of the amounts of essential oils You may have at home, and definately not throwing out (unless expired). It is knowing how to use them wisely, and for them to continue through the generations. This page is to make You are aware essentially of the dangers of some essential oils disappearing, and how critical species are. It is improving over time through awareness. This is to make you aware and make better choices when you order essential oils and safety includes expiry dates.
Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamanski) this is listed critcially endangered. When this essential oil comes up 'in an aromatic card reading', I do cringe, as I don't want people purchasing for it to sit there, as you use one time. Some companies like Perfect Potion, have it in stock at special times, for this reason of being rare. At these times, I put a drop in a personal inhaler to keep longer than that month, with special essential oils like this one. It is used sparingly with the professional aromatherapy. Yes, I use for grief, where the person is not functioning, and it is affecting the physical body greatly. Doesn't go in my diffuser these days, as I have been educated over the past decade on why it is so rare. This is where personal inhaler to smell before going to sleep is beneficial, and is able to be carried with You. I always carry a personal inhaler to funerals of relatives to assist me.
I don't always replace essential oils during quiet times in my clinic like holidays.
Endangered species is why, I ask that You don't go out to purchase. Either consult with me or use the energy of the words to assist the nurturing and change for the month. It is here to guide us. Reflect on the words to guide You, listen to your wisdom, and give self care to You.
I have shared essential oils amongst fellow aromatherapists when, they only require for a short time, as away of sharing resources for the greater good, and they have with me as well.
Want to know what is on the 'Red List' of
endanged species (remember oils come from plants) here.
You will see it mentioned in Aromatherapy Profiles of being on the endanged list. Please note, that overtime, species can come on and off the list. This can be that they are cultivated and not being used from the wild.
Yes, there are other essential oils of concern that you would be aware of like Frankincense, Indian Sandalwood, and Rosewood. Even Lavender angusfolia has been on the list at times from overuse.
It is about educating ourselves, for sustainability in Aromatherapy (plus other modulaties like herbalism) and conservation of our plants that do so much for us. Look at Airmid Institute (https://airmidinstitute.org), a non for profit organisation.
Be aware and proper use, will bring the best rewards for our environment, and You. Nature is our existence.
